The old fashion bluetick has been around long before anyone can remember. They were certainly among the very first hounds registered as "Blueticks" by U.K.C. in 1946. Oliver O. Grant was the author of that standard and an avid breeder of old fashioned blues. Warren Houslouer, H.O. Smith, Bill Green and ever so many more, followed behind these foundation hounds. The early BBCHA Blue Books proudly expounded on the merits and exploits of such hounds during that era. "Big N' Blu" was a common phrase of the time.
Then as the years passed, the smaller Bluetick gained favor by the majority. The truly "Big N' Blu" hounds became the minority. The "Bluetick Breed" soon chose to become "Standardized" and a parting of ways was established. The old fashioned blues, still U.K.C. registered were routinely disqualified when shown on the bench, due to their size and age old characteristics, once held in such high regard.
However, many serious fanciers of these old fashioned blues banded together and decided to preserve the hounds they believed in. They resisted change and refused to become "Standardized", modified or modernized. They're still here, just like the one's great granddad told us about.
